Survey: Being green on the road important for travelers

Travelers who are planning on hitting the road for upcoming summer holidays might be a little more green energy-conscious this year, according to a joint survey conducted by The GO Group and GO Airport Express.

The two Chicago-based companies - which provide airport shuttle services - reported that 71 percent of the respondents to their joint survey said that it is either important or very important to try to reduce their carbon footprint while they are traveling.

More than 2,000 people responded to the survey, and only 13 percent of participants said reducing their carbon footprint was not important while 15 percent said they hadn't thought about it.

"These results indicate that travelers are environmentally aware, and we will continue to explore ways we can help them reduce their carbon footprint," said John McCarthy, president of The GO Group, LLC.  "By nature, shared rides are green rides. With six people on board, a van uses only 30 percent of the fuel that six cars would use and creates 54 percent fewer carbon emissions."

The Scion IQ was recently recommended as one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles under $20,000 by Kiplinger, which could be of interest to those looking for a greener ride every day, not just on vacation.
