World Energy Solutions announced its assistance of the U.S. General Services Administration Region 2 in procuring roughly 300 kilowatt hours of electricity for the region, which includes a few GSA facilities in New York and other federal accounts that include the American Red Cross and United Nations.

The new energy contracts were carried out through online auctions on the World Energy Exchange, gathering 127 bids from six suppliers which are expected to result in roughly $10.8 million in savings when weighed against agreements already in place. Notable results from the auction include two-year contracts for GSA’s Manhattan and Upstate Service Centers, expected to produce savings of $3 million and $750,000 respectively per year. The Manhattan Service Center purchased 100 percent green energy, and the Upstate Service Center secured 7.5 percent green power for accounts that had not yet purchased green power.

GSA Region 2 won a GSA Achievement Award for Real Property Innovation in sustainability in 2011 and was notified it will be receiving another award in 2012 for its continued leadership.

A release from GSA out June 15 indicated the agency is right on track with its energy and sustainability goals for 2011, helping the government save money and improve its environmental performance.
