It was a wonderful two weeks in October at Viridian—traveling town to town, state to state, meeting with some of the most passionate, committed Associates as part of our corporate road show. Being on the road is an incredible opportunity to watch the interaction of different teams and leaders across our entire territory.
We have such a diverse group of people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities. But one of the beauties of Generation V is that we are characterized by harmony and an uncanny ability to unify a diverse group of individuals around our three pillars of profit, people and planet. We certainly have individuals who prioritize one pillar a bit over the other three, but everyone overlaps in what they care about.
Being on the road was an incredible chance to see how everyone bonds together. Everyone has a wonderfully different dynamic energy but the one thing uniting all of Generation V, in a pretty dramatic way, is that it’s comprised of those who are out-of-the-box. The standard definition of out-of-the-box thinking is looking at things in an unconventional way and realizing that focusing on others rather than ourselves is a key to greatness.
Here at Viridian, for example, we see people as human beings and not numbers on a spreadsheet, even though a lot of times in life society has a tendency to dehumanize people. They get you coffee, bring you food, park your car. They become merely objects that get you what you want.
Generation V respects people for who they are as individuals and that’s a beautiful thing. When Associates talk about why they love being a part of relationship marketing and part of Viridian, it ties into the fact that our company is one of the few places left where people are seen as people and are celebrated as such. This is game-changer when it comes to building a team; and it is the only way you will truly succeed in this business long-term.
There’s an acronym in direct selling called FAYC, which stand for “forget about yourself completely.” If you are going to reach the heights of achievement to which you aspire, that is exactly what you have to do. The vast majority of people who are really successful in social selling circles—unless they are downright lucky —are the ones who don’t think about themselves and don’t look at people as a means to an end. They focus on helping others become better and have a better life. If you don’t get it, the people you meet know it and when you try to talk to them about being a customer or an Associate, they will see right through to the true motive.
The business and profession of network marketing is all about those who realize they are in the box, get out of the box, and stay outside the box—even though people will try to put you back in because they don’t want to be left alone in there! Viridian Leaders and Associates already know this. It’s evident by the way they shake hands, by the way they have conversations, and by the way they do the daily things they do. Generation V represents what it is truly like outside of the box.
The road tour might quickly be moving into our rearview mirror but I can’t help but still feel a sense of energy, inspiration and invigoration a few days later. There are so many things that impressed me about this year’s tour—most notably the fact that it demonstrates what we have truly been able to sustain over a long period of time.
Going from market to market, it is incredible to see that so many of the faces and leaders in these states are those same individuals who first started with us four years ago. It truly validates our mission, our purpose, and who we are as a company. More importantly, it validates the bond and community we have created as Generation V.
Network marketing is certainly an industry in which loyalty is hard to come by. You generally have a lot of turnover, not only in your lower ranks but to some degree in your mid- to higher-tier ranks, as well. However, here at Viridian, we are characterized by a steadfast loyalty and unwavering commitment to our mission of bringing affordable, green energy to each and every home. This message was completely reinforced as our President Meredith Berkich and I went from town to town, interacting with so many of the same faces that have been part of the company and our community since the early days dating back to 2009.
One of the highlights of our tour came in Chicago, when Chicago Board of Trade member Senior Director Matthew Johnson got us access to the trading floor. On October 25, I had the opportunity to speak with Phil Flynn, a contributor to Fox Business Network, for the video series PRICE Links. For those of you who missed the clip, what I really wanted to communicate was that at Viridian, we look at energy in a completely different way. Our mission is green energy at an affordable price and we think green energy is the way of the future and an undeniable trend in the marketplace. It’s our commitment to this value proposition that has gained the attention of so many incredible associates, customers and, most recently, Lyndon Rive and Elon Musk, co-founder/CEO and chairman, respectively, of SolarCity, our newest partner. (I will be discussing our exciting partnership with SolarCity in a subsequent blog post, so stay tuned!)
It was incredibly exciting for us to be able to walk around the floor and meet 10 to 15 people who are all associated with Viridian as members of our field. It confirmed what we are working towards and the credibility we have built. That was a pretty special moment for me.
The fact is that each and every one of you has been tirelessly evangelizing on behalf of our value proposition, remaining unshakeable in your commitment to spreading the word about the quality of our company and the opportunity we offer.
What really stood out for me on the road tour was the quality of people that we attract. Simply put, we have a field of top-notch talent. The people who represent our company are intelligent, successful individuals who are committed to our long-term vision of not only being a great energy company but really emerging as one of the best direct selling companies in the world.
Viridian is a long-term opportunity. It’s a place where people can plug into our community and plug into what we are about and feel very proud of what they represent. We remain focused on continuing to innovate, continuing to lead and continuing to be an incredible successful business over the long term.
It was great seeing so many people at this year’s PowerUP! conference. With so many like-minded individuals gathering together, the camaraderie was outstanding. I felt tons of good vibes from everyone there, which is important, because in order to succeed in this business, you’ve got to get the negativity out of your life. And PowerUP! is a great way to do just that, giving you the belief in yourself and the belief in what Viridian has to offer.
This year’s conference was exceptionally good, and I received tons of fantastic feedback from everyone with whom I spoke. Time will tell how good we do, but it’s an exciting time to be with Viridian. The recent addition of solar power into our repertoire differentiates us from everyone else in the market. In fact, I’d even say there’s no more competition in the market—the competition just got smoked.
PowerUP! certainly rejuvenated a lot of Associates. Prior to the conference, we’d hold meetings twice a week in our office that would draw current Associates who many times would come alone just to learn their trade a little better . After it, we’d have 20 people coming to each meeting bringing potential new Associates with them to see the business overview video. After the presentation, we would spend time with a Q&A session and then do some training. Today, the level of excitement has risen dramatically and I thank PowerUP! for that.
And it’s great to have new blood in the business—for everyone involved. If you have members of your downteam who have maybe given up on the business and won’t return your calls, texts or emails, stop chasing them. What’s easier: raising the dead back to life or having a new baby? If people aren’t going to take this serious and work the business, it’s time to move on. It’s as simple as that. Go out and find fresh faces.
There’s never an end to who you could recruit, either. Think about how many people you come across during the course of your day. We have a great product that practically sells itself. So strike up a conversation and make an appointment to show your business plan—you never know who might make a great addition to your team. And remember, the odds are that the next Viridian superstar that appears in your business will probably come from a friend of a friend of a friend and you haven’t even met that person yet. The wider you grow your business, the better the chances are for success. This is a numbers game and the people showing the business the most in the end will end up on top.
