Earth Month has come and gone, and Viridian was able to make a huge impact in numerous communities across all our states thanks to the help of numerous Associates, staff members and volunteers.
April began with a series of Earth Month presentations in Viridian corporate headquarters in Norwalk, CT. Staffers were informed of the upcoming events and encouraged to attend and participate where they could, and they also signed pledge cards indicating how they would attempt to green their lifestyles. The company also sponsored a “Home Energy Reduction” contest for employees, with cash prizes for those who lowered their home energy use the most from March to April.
There were 17 events held in April, as corporate assisted local sustainability leaders in organizing events in their communities. In all, nearly 250 volunteers turned out for the various cleanups, including Viridian Founder and CEO Michael Fallquist, Chief Financial Officer Roop Bhullar, SVP of Sustainability Cami Boehme, SVP of Viridian Network Meredith Berkich, VP of Field Development Bob Ulrich, and VP of Operations Mike Chester.
The scores of volunteers donated more than 700 hours of their time to the various efforts, and those hours paid off handsomely, with more than 245 trees planted and more than 800 individual plants finding new homes.
In addition, the groups collected some 24,000 pounds of trash; at one town-wide event in Kingston, NY, volunteers scooped up more than nine tons of debris. Viridian also participated in several invasive-species removal efforts, and aided in a number of weeding and mulching projects within our markets.
“We couldn’t have done this without the strong support of Viridian Corporate,” said Associate Sustainability Council member Chris Schipper of Maryland. “We had 51 volunteers, with more than 23 from Viridian alone, and we removed more than 3,000 pounds of trash from the Hudson Branch tributary of the Patapsco Valley Heritage Greenway.”
Viridian Associates and volunteers in Maryland also planted 65 trees at Francis Scott Key elementary school in Baltimore to prepare for the upcoming 200th anniversary of the writing of the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Similar cleanup and planting efforts took place in all Viridian marketplaces on the East Coast and in Illinois.
"Being a part of something much larger than myself was really amazing,” said Pennsylvania’s David Ritter, also a member of the Associate Sustainability Council. “I mean, I know how hard I worked, personally, but to see all the trees planted, and all the trash and debris picked up, and all the invasive species yanked out, would have taken me years to do all that by myself. It really helped me feel grateful and proud to be a part of Generation V."

April is shaping up to be an incredible month for all of Generation V! From a business perspective, most have been positively impacted by the new comp plan enhancements and one of our most exciting new markets is just weeks away from launching. There is a buzz in the air, and the seeds of hard work and dedication are coming into full bloom. The timing is quite serendipitous as we are seeing this exact process happen in nature with the arrival of spring and one of my favorite months in Viridian—April’s Earth Awareness Month.

If you are new to the Viridian community or have been in hibernation, now is the perfect time to come out and meet all of the amazing Gen V’ers. Through the efforts of the Sustainability Council, corporate, and a team of dedicated Associates, April’s calendar is chock-full of local sustainability events right in your backyard. The goal of the council this year is to have monthly sustainability initiatives and two events in each of our markets for April. It was a challenge everyone was eager to undertake. We will see ongoing communications going out with details on the time, date and locations of these events. From beach and river cleanups, to tree plantings and even a New York City rooftop project, there is certainly something that will appeal to your interest to volunteer at and attend.
So what’s the big deal in attending these sustainability events, anyway? Well, if you truly want to get to the heart of what Viridian is, I say you see it by meeting its community of heart- and service-centered people; people who are dedicated to taking action to leave this planet better for future generations. It is also a great opportunity to invite your customers and show them the Viridian mission in action!

My first Viridian sustainability event, a beach cleanup almost three years ago, is forever time-stamped in my heart. The day marked my very first one as a fulltime entrepreneur and helped to reignite my personal passion for creating a sustainable family lifestyle with my husband Jay and our children Audrey and Miles. The day before, I had worked my very last day in corporate America and I was turning the page on a new chapter in life. As we picked up endless amounts of garbage off a local Connecticut beach that day, I looked around and realized that I was among some of the most fascinating and forward-thinking people I had met thus far in life; people I’m sure I would have never gotten to know well if I had not attended.
My hope is to see a sea of faces at these events to support Viridian’s Earth Awareness Month. I know that after attending, someone just like me will have a story to tell about the huge impact that’s been made on their life.
See you there!
