With our annual PowerUP! convention less than five weeks away, here at the home office, we’re counting down the top reasons each and every Associate needs to do everything possible to be in attendance. And a chief one is celebration—the chance to reflect on what we’ve already accomplished both personally and companywide, what we’ve earmarked as future goals and what this direct selling profession represents to millions of people worldwide. We will celebrate the opportunity and satisfaction of this business as it can allow ordinary people to experience extraordinary results.

I was reminded two weeks ago of the gift of being thankful to a business that compels you to get out of bed in the morning with a smile on your face, a business that affords people a career path that allows them to make a difference in the lives of others.

Last week, my immediate family and I prepared to take our first vacation in a very long time. I secured a lovely beachfront rental through a reputable site—as I’ve done dozens of times—and we started packing, imagining the wonderful times we’d share together. As we were preparing to leave the house, I was shaken from my reverie by a shocking email from the rental site: The rental listing never existed and the money I had paid in full via wire-transfer had been stolen by a fraudster. Wow.

Now, I won’t turn this into anything bigger than it is, but it did leave our entire family feeling extremely disappointed. I filed my reports with the authorities, and then wrote a letter to the alleged property manager—more for my own satisfaction than anything else (I figured he wouldn’t read it)—just to vent that what he’d done impacted good people beyond the monetary theft. He had stolen my family’s time, dreams and much anticipated memories. In other words, things that we simply can’t put a price-tag on.

It led me to consider what it would be like to earn a living that way. To pay your bills with funds you received by deliberately deceiving and hurting others. Having phone conversations that are 100 percent lies with another human being, all the while knowing you are about to crush their dreams. These people have to wake up in the morning and look in the mirror. Think about what that must feel like. Perhaps they think they are pretty clever, maybe they have no conscience at all, but at the end of the day I do believe that kind of existence will come with a price of regret and I feel sorry for them.

As I thought about it on a broader scale, it led me to think of the countless number of people who daily head to jobs they hate or that give them no satisfaction, joy or sense of accomplishment. That’s depressing on a whole different level. Millions of people living day in and day out with no real purpose to inspire them. And then think about us. Think about the people who are in network marketing—a profession that rewards you to empower people, make their lives better and help them succeed, while simultaneously taking charge of your own destiny. You set your personal goals and commit to a future of financial and time freedom where your driving force is making the world a better place.

Whether you are on the corporate or field side, this is what we do. This is the business we are in. At the end of the day, it gives people the amazing good fortune to look at themselves and know they are involved in something extremely special. There are over 16 million of us involved in network marketing and committed to a profession dedicated to sharing the vision of what we can offer with others.

So, let’s get ready to celebrate our industry and personal accomplishments—and PowerUP!—at Foxwoods from Sept. 5 to 7. Be amongst countless fellow Associates who are excited about waking up each and every morning and bettering the lives of themselves and others. There’s still time to register for this year’s event. I hope to see you in the audience and on stage, ready to take charge and plug in.
