Frank Marone -- Three Traits You Need to Succeed at Network Marketing
Let’s be clear, network marketing is certainly not for everyone—but it is for a lot of us.
One of the first signs that you could be successful in this line of business is if you are someone with an open mind. Too many of us grow up thinking there is only one path to take: attend college, get a job, get married, have kids, and retire. That’s what we were raised to believe. But those who have an open mind and realize there are multiple ways to do something—especially when it comes to how to secure and plan for your future, other than having a retirement plan—are cut out for this industry. Those who will succeed in this business believe there is always another way and don’t shy away from a different, even unexpected, path.
When it comes to network marketing, those who have had previous experiences with it may have had a negative run. After all, there are only a handful of people who can say that in the last 20 years, they have been in network marketing and have been successful. And because these people have a bad experience and some of them quit, they may be wary about the next network marketing opportunity.
But open-minded people can look past one bad experience and realize that there are other network marketing companies out there that have better opportunities. Take Viridian, for example. When you think about encouraging people to make responsible energy choices—instead of selling a drink or makeup product—you are “selling” the future. Making responsible energy decisions is top of mind for all businesses and individuals today and green energy is not going away. Unless the sun stops shining and the wind stops blowing, we are creating a great residual business.
In addition to being open-minded, you need to be coachable. Specifically, are you someone who wants to do it your way all the time? Or, are you open to suggestions and mentoring from others? If the former defines you then this is not the business for you. You can’t do network marketing your way. Using a proven system created specifically for your company is the only real way to duplicate your efforts and be successful.
What’s more, you need to know people and have a wide network. So ask yourself: do you have good contacts; have you built up a rolodex over the years; and do you genuinely like communicating with others? This could be a perfect business for you if you answer “yes” to all of these questions.
If you have a strong number of connections—and credibility amongst your friends, families and colleagues—then you will have a great shot at succeeding in this business. Without credibility and respect, it’s hard to get people to sit down and see your business model. Think about, if you have a booming business and career, and a proven way of communicating with others, when you present this network marketing opportunity to someone else, they will want to listen. You already have the built-in relationship and respect factor on your side.
The thing with network marketing, and especially with our company, is that people sometimes mistakenly believe that they have to be someone they are not in order to succeed. They may see top earners like me and Joe O and think they have to be that person. The reality in this industry is that you don’t have to DIRECTLY know all the potential leaders in your organization, but persistence will lead you to someone who knows someone, who knows someone, who knows the next superstar. Rarely are the home run hitters people you sponsor yourself. That’s why coaching and mentoring is so important for you to teach. I promise you that the leaders will appear as your business develops.
There’s always room for tremendous growth in this industry. Anyone can become a super star… it might even be you. You just have to be hard-working, open-minded, coachable and well-connected.
