Sergio is a subsistence farmer, who, like most men in Portrero Platanal, has toiled in the fields his entire life to provide food and income for his family. His family’s day starts early, is filled with labor-intensive chores, and continues by candlelight after dark. But like parents the world over, Sergio wants his children to have the life they choose, not just the one they were born to. He knows education will give them choices—and that the increased study time made possible by a single light bulb can illuminate not just homework, but their future and the future of their own children.
