Sergio toils in the fields to provide for his young family. But he wants a bigger, better life for his children. The increased study time made possible by their new electric light can help make that dream come true.
There are only two teachers in all of Portrero Platanal, but Ninfa has the dedication of ten. Electricity allows more work hours in her day, so she can create inspiring lessons whenever inspiration strikes.
GRID Alternatives said our project one of the most ambitious they’ve tackled in the region. But together we were able to bring clean, sustainable light where there once was just the flicker of a kerosene lamp.

Our previous 7 Continents in 7 Years global sustainability initiatives have taken us far from our native shores, to places as remote as the Amazon Rainforest, Ghana, Indonesia and Fiji. In Year Five of our commitment we stayed closer to home, but encountered our most challenging project in Portrero Platanal, Nicaragua, our North American sustainability destination.

Nicaragua, the largest country in the Central American isthmus, is known as the “Land of Lakes and Volcanoes”: a breathtakingly beautiful and still mostly undeveloped country where, according to the United Nations Development Programme, almost 1 in 4 people lives off the grid. Cut off from the modern world, their opportunities for a good education and life outside of a rural economy are slim.

But affordable, sustainable energy is what Viridian is all about—and we’ve got the means to make it happen. We were privileged to be able to serve this hardworking village, and “turn on the light” for all of its inhabitants.

“Power with Purpose” is the official Viridian motto, but “Work Hard, Play Hard” comes in a close second. A zip line excursion, a hike to a volcano and a brief resort stay awaited our tired but happy voluntourists.
Travel is an exciting part of 7 Continents in 7 Years. But more important is bringing hope to energy-poor communities.  As one of our leaders said, “This is true work, but it’s the most fulfilling work. It’s the culture we create.”
